But for some reason I wasn't intrigued by the genre anymore just know one of my favorite is 'Aliens'' I started watching it and I felt so charmed by it all. The story is practically inexistent but you won't mind. The visual aspect and how things are going in this lovely and simple way can't let you indifferent.
We see the Emperor - on that day still a God for his subjects - involved in his everyday activities, consulting with his adjutants, but also involved with his hobby, basically waiting for the arrival of the Americans in order to surrender. When they eventually come to fetch him, Hirohito has to take his leave of his divine status and submit to the wishes of General MacArthur.
The fantastic Ogata Issey plays Hirohito in a minimal way, devoid of his voice, stylised and Chaplinesque several times Yankees call him 'Charlie'. An overly protected individual, but indeed involved in the horrors of the war, and yet susceptible to the reason of the enemy.
In several regards, the film is a rather unusual Sokurov: The Sun has special effects, several jokes and is in both dramatic development and the use of space surprisingly clear and entertaining. From the very beginning of the movie, the characters seem rather lost on screen, which initially gives the impression that the actors do not feel comfortable in their roles or that the viewer does not feel comfortable with them acting , but the resulting awkwardness somehow seems adequate regarding the atmosphere of war-torn Japan.
The camera work conducted by Sokurov himself on the other hand is rather reserved. And Give My Love to the Swallows ….

Appropriately the movie is shot throughout in crepuscular twilight, a sepia gloom for interior shots and a truly strange bleached-out blankness on the rare occasions when the emperor goes out of doors - as if the shock of defeat and nuclear catastrophe had leached all the natural light out of the world.
It really is a quite extraordinary visual effect, and for a long time you watch it blinking, as if your eyes might eventually become accustomed to this subdued light. Sokurov is both cinematographer and director, and the well-documented fact of his own failing eyesight must of course make his admirers wonder if this effect is entirely intentional.
Maybe; maybe not. Common sense suggests that this problem would make his films too bright. In any case, the question itself for me lends its own aesthetic and human poignancy to the work, a sense that the director has found his own very personal, serendipitous access to the idea of failure and the withdrawal of light.
The sound design is also a thing of wonder. Almost continually under the dialogue, the score murmurs and crackles like bad radio reception, and the effect is to make the film look like a remembered nightmare or like images from another planet.
